Each year, U.S. universities report detailed information to the National Science Foundation on their Research & Development (R&D) expenditures and on their graduate students and postdocs in science and engineering. Here, we use the latest available data to illustrate how R&D expenditures and the next generation of scientists and engineers are distributed and supported at academic institutions across the U.S. This interactive tool provides the ability to view the institutions in each state and across the nation with the most R&D expenditures and graduate students and postdocs in any field or subfield. It also offers the ability to view data for a specific institution or state. As described elsewhere in this report, philanthropy is included in multiple funding sources, including philanthropy/nonprofit, and to some extent, university institutional, other U.S., and all other sources.
